New York Red Bulls Play To A Thrilling 1-1 Draw With New York City FC

A Tale Of Two Halves

Saturday night's Hudson River Derby between the New York Red Bulls and New York City FC ended in a 1-1 draw, a result that keeps both teams in the thick of the Eastern Conference playoff race. The Red Bulls took the lead in the first half through Lewis Morgan, but NYCFC equalized in the second half through Talles Magno.
In the first half, the Red Bulls were the better team and deservedly took the lead. They were more aggressive in the tackle and created several chances, with Morgan, Luquinhas, and Frankie Amaya all going close. NYCFC, on the other hand, looked disjointed and struggled to create any clear-cut chances.

NYCFC Improve In Second Half

The second half was a different story, however, as NYCFC came out with renewed vigor. They started to control possession and create chances, and Magno eventually equalized with a fine finish. The Red Bulls had a few chances to win it late on, but they couldn't find a way past NYCFC goalkeeper Sean Johnson.

Playoff Implications

The draw leaves the Red Bulls in fourth place in the Eastern Conference, two points ahead of NYCFC in fifth. Both teams are now just three points behind third-place FC Cincinnati, and with just four games remaining in the regular season, the race for the playoffs is wide open.

Quotes From The Managers

“I'm happy with the point,” said Red Bulls manager Gerhard Struber. “We played well in the first half and deserved to take the lead. But NYCFC came out strong in the second half and made it difficult for us. We had a few chances to win it late on, but it wasn't to be.”
“I'm disappointed with the result,” said NYCFC manager Nick Cushing. “We didn't play well in the first half, but we showed great character to come back in the second half. We're still in the race for the playoffs, and we're going to keep fighting until the end.”
