John Tenta was born on June 22, 1963, in Pitt Meadows, British Columbia, Canada. From a young age, Tenta displayed an impressive physique and had a passion for wrestling. He began his wrestling career as an amateur at Louisiana State University (LSU) before transitioning to professional sumo in 1990.
Tenta quickly rose through the ranks of sumo wrestling, earning the nickname "Earthquake" due to his massive size and destructive power in the ring. He achieved notable success in Japan, earning several high-level titles and becoming the first non-Japanese to win the Makunouchi championship.
