Former Bank of England economist takes on top Treasury job

'Opening gambit' will be to tackle cost-of-living crisis

Rachel Reeves has become Britain's first female Chancellor of the Exchequer. The former Bank of England economist took on the top Treasury job on Friday, becoming the first woman to hold the position in the UK's history.

Reeves, a former chess champion, is a graduate of New College Oxford and the London School of Economics. She has been a Labour MP since 2010, and has held a number of ministerial positions, including shadow chancellor and shadow work and pensions secretary.

In her new role, Reeves will be responsible for overseeing the UK's economy. She will face a number of challenges, including the cost-of-living crisis, the war in Ukraine, and the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
