Jamaica Declared Disaster Area, Islandwide Curfew To Be Imposed Ahead Of Hurricane Beryl

Trelawny Man Charged With Burglary After Turning Himself In

KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Government of Jamaica has declared the island a disaster area as Hurricane Beryl approaches the island.

An islandwide curfew will be imposed from 6:00 pm on Wednesday, July 31, until 6:00 am on Friday, August 2.

The announcement was made by Prime Minister Andrew Holness at a press conference at Jamaica House on Tuesday afternoon.

“We have received reports that Hurricane Beryl is expected to directly impact Jamaica within the next 48 hours,” Holness said.

“In light of this, the Cabinet has met and has taken the decision to declare the island a disaster area,” he added.

The prime minister said that the curfew is being imposed to ensure the safety of citizens and to allow the authorities to carry out the necessary preparations for the hurricane.

“I urge all Jamaicans to take this hurricane seriously and to make the necessary preparations,” Holness said.

“We have a lot of work to do in a short space of time, but I am confident that we can get through this together,” he added.
